Painting Over Wallpaper – Good or Bad Idea?
Thinking about painting over wallpaper? As a professional painter and somewhat skilled wallpaper hanger and remover I don't recommend it. You see, when you paint over it it's going to be really difficult to remove it in the future. There is only one time I ever painted over wallpaper and that was because somebody sized brand-new drywall without painting or priming it first. That's a big no-no. Because the new drywall was never sealed first with paint, the wallpaper was hard to remove. You couldn't keep the wall wet long enough to remove the paper because the walk kept sucking up all the water making it impossible to remove the paper. So there was places where the top layer of paper was taken off and we just sand those areas up smooth and painted the walls.
